Settling into the Rhythms of Fall

I realized today that my morning meditations have been a bit more grounded than they were in the summer months and my mind has felt more settled than it has in quite some time.

This might have to do with the return of my kids to school, after a year and a half with them home. I have to be honest, it has been heavenly (and so quiet!) to have my children back in their routines. But I suspect the seasonal shift has something to do with it as well.

If we pay attention to the rhythms of nature, we might notice the settling energy of fall beginning. Autumn doesn’t officially start until next week, but you can catch a whiff of it, can’t you? The subtle changes of colors, the dryness of late summer being nourished by our first rains, our first damp and foggy mornings, the first leaves just starting to let go, slowly, one by one.

Fall can be a time of increased steadiness. The return of routine after the busy energy of summer. It’s a time of preparation. The natural world begins to prepare for the withdrawing, retreating inward, resting of winter. As we transition into this time of preparation, we might simplify. Simplify our schedule, be intentional about slowing down the pace of our day and week, shed what is complex for what is simple and clean. I have been going through clutter and things that have accumulated in my house and clearing things out that are no longer needed.

As you settle into fall routines, perhaps learn how to better support and nourish yourself with Sona’s upcoming Ayurveda series: Aligning with Autumn.  Sona will guide you through how to optimally adjust your diet, movement and lifestyle practices with the season and for your unique constitution, so that you feel nurtured, balanced and embodied within your deep relationship to nature. Or you might ground yourself in Shari’s twice weekly morning Pranayama series. Begin your day attending to your breath and encourage your vitality and well being.

Many people find their way back to the routine of their yoga practice in the fall months. If we haven’t seen you for a while, we are excited to welcome you back! I know some of you have been waiting for in studio options to return to classes. Your teachers are excited to see you!

A reminder that we have a few in person classes at each studio, with Covid safety precautions in place (masks, distancing, increased ventilation, air purifiers). If you feel comfortable joining us, take a look at our in-studio options. We will be adding classes over the coming weeks. Please note that preregistration is required for all classes, even in studio classes, since space is limited. Please cancel your registration in advance if you are unable to show up. If you do not attend a class you have signed up for, your pass will be deducted for the class.

For those of you that prefer to practice from home, we will continue to maintain a full schedule of online classes.
