Waiting and Joy
This summer has held quite a bit of adventure for me and my daughter, as we have been traveling for her competitive season as a springboard diver. We have been in California – north of the bay area, Croatia, and are now currently in Southern California again. After all of these trips back to back, I realize that traveling is really quite a bit of work. The packing, the airports, the navigating planes, trains, buses, Ubers, hotels, not to mention delays, waiting in lines, adjusting time zones, finding food when you need it (or when your teenager desperately needs it). There’s a lot about travel that is like this. It requires patience, flexibility, and resilience. A little like life in general.
In between, there have been moments of pure magic, play, and the joy of exploration and experiencing new things. In Croatia (beautiful, beautiful Croatia), we took a truly magical boat ride along a scenic piece of the rocky Northern Croatian Coastline of the Adriatic Sea. We anchored near an isolated beach and jumped and dove off of the boat, and swam in some of the most perfect water I have ever been in. Refreshing, clear, clean and calm. The sea so salty and buoyant, it was easy to float right on the surface – the perfect Savasana, feeling all tension melting away. I was a child again in that water, experiencing complete freedom.
Whatever your summer plans are, whether you are traveling or staying put – I imagine you are having both experiences – moments that require patience and waiting, and moments of freedom.
Can we breathe through the waiting and surrender to the joy when it arises?
I do hope you’ve had moments of feeling like a child on summer break. And I understand if you have had more experiences that require patience and breathing through the difficult. Perhaps your yoga practice has taught you to hold both of these states lightly. Summer is fleeting. Let’s breathe with it.
